Designing Rooms for Kids
When designing rooms for kids, it’s important to remember how active they can get. For this family looking for interior deisgn in Raleigh, N.C., their two boys had outgrown the ‘style’ of their rooms and needed much more storage and FUN-ctional space for schoolwork and friends. Along the way, we updated the shared bathroom and family room to make a drastic transformation to their most heavily used spaces. Check out the reveal.
DESIGNING FAMILY ROOMS FOR KIDS
The family of four wanted all of their spaces to be durable, yet fun and colorful where they could enjoy one another and host friends and family for game nights.
Deuces ran wild as this family has two boys, two puppies, and two cats who call this place home. You can understand how durability played a key role in our designs. We made it all work with the help of high-performance fabrics, plus a pet and spill-friendly carpet change, and scuff-free paint. In the family room, we added two custom furniture pieces to enable our clients to comfortably enjoy their home without design compromises.
We took advantage of ample natural light in the family room to add dark but soft blue paint on the walls. Thanks to a high-performance light grey fabric sectional, the family can sit comfortably during movie and game nights with the confidence that it will withhold everyday use.
The kids are Lego enthusiasts, so we wanted an area where they could enjoy creating and building. A custom 8’ counter height table accomplished that goal. Made of hemp wood with a waterfall edge, the table paired beautifully with bright yellow stools. Adding an air hockey table helped set a fun mood in this space and inspires competitive game nights on-screen and off!
DESIGNING BEDROOMS FOR KIDS
This bedroom received a unique colorblock to reflect its pre-teen resident’s favorite colors. To give the half and half wall feature the full effect, colors continue to all the doors in the space to make a bold statement and seamless design.
A wood upholstered bed is accompanied by a custom wood slat wall with floating shelves that frame a new homework and gaming desk. Lego wall decals help pull all the design aspects of the room together.
TRANSFORMING ROOMS FOR GROWING KIDS
For the younger brother, a custom bunkbed towers above a colorful geometric rug, with a hangout spot underneath featuring a chartreuse swivel chair. The colorblock continues in this space with a blue stripe carrying up the wall and along the ceiling to give the room an unexpected pop and make it feel larger. Colorful storage and accessories throughout combine with a new desk to make space for creativity and wonder.
UPDATING KIDS’ BATHROOMS
The simple updates to this bathroom prove that small touches can make a grand impact.
Inspired by a love for fire trucks, we gave this Jack and Jill bathroom a nice transformation. We elevated the existing vanity with a striking cobalt blue color accompanied by white stone surface and matte black cabinet hardware. Bold red and gold sconces perched above two black framed mirrors mark the cherry on top of this space.
