Cary family room design adds a burst of style & functionality

A family of three in Cary, N.C. needed a more functional first floor family room design. One that met their needs for durability while adding a burst of personality. Design selections revolved around the home’s mid-century modern style. It was important to embrace that historic context and elevate features to be more attractive and functional. With the addition of unique textures and refined pops of color, TEW Design Studio was able to create a space that this family could enjoy and comfortably host friends and family.

Durability played a key role in how we approached this design. Home to a toddler, two puppies and a cat, this residence tends to be high-traffic. Therefore, with the help of high-performance fabrics and indoor-outdoor textiles, the homeowner family can enjoy their space without design compromises. Tall bookshelves provide the family with extra hidden storage for toys and board games. It also offers space to place greenery, photos and souvenirs on the open shelving tower.

Existing organic shaped mid-century wallpaper brings a big statement in the stairwell leading up to the main floor. It pairs well with the gold sunburst pendant above the dining room table. Black and cream color tones throughout accentuate all the design elements in the space. A perfect blend of old, the family’s heirloom console table centers the back wall accentuated with colorful artwork placed above.

We took advantage of the small wall at the entry to add a beautiful walnut console table featuring multiple storage options for various needs. A unique shaped mirror jives with the mid-century theme in cooperation with a concrete table lamp to give the small space just a touch of functional style.
