Chapel Hill Home Design Update

In the summer of 2023, an area family realized that their Chapel Hill home design needed a thorough update to help reflect their personal aesthetic. TEW Design Studio stepped in to design a cohesive concept that married their personal tastes with the home’s overall style. Read the project reveal below, and view even more photos in our portfolio.

DINING ROOM DESIGN UPDATES

The dining room was transformed into a more moody space by enveloping walls, trim and the ceiling in a rich dark purple. A custom hemp wood table with black stain and sleek faux leather chairs center the space with an edge. These dark elements are the perfect backdrop for unexpected color reveals from the artwork and textured area rug. The contrast continues with the ivory curtains and beautiful custom chandelier.

KITCHEN REDESIGN

The previous kitchen felt very traditional with dark cherry stained cabinetry and a stylized vent hood. The homeowners lean more mid-century in style, so we removed the traditional wood vent hood to make way for a big impact and more modern unit. We refinished the cabinetry with Wrought Iron by Benjamin Moore and replaced cabinet hardware with sleek, matte black pulls.

Builder-grade white subway tile was exchanged for a beautiful 3D handmade porcelain for texture and light reflection. Updating other fixtures such as the island pendants, sink faucet, and counter stools bring the kitchen together seamlessly.

We carried the same story into the breakfast nook. A dark wood table and navy chairs pull out the blue tones in the tile backsplash. A new rug and light fixture help to define the area. Throughout the home, we commissioned a local artist to create colorful artwork to finish each space.

LIVING ROOM DESIGN UPDATES

The living room went from bland and uninteresting to dramatic thanks to appropriate color choices that emphasized the coffered ceilings and other architectural elements without feeling choppy. Surrounding walls stayed neutral, while the built-ins and fireplace wall were painted a dark gray infused with green undertones to unify everything.

An even darker gray on the back wall of the shelves enables all the books and artifacts stand out. The fireplace surround and mantel also received a much needed update.

Meanwhile, the ceiling now features the same dark charcoal (BM-Wrought Iron) as the kitchen cabinets to help it stand out without being overwhelming. Eyes are now drawn into the living space to make the large room feel more cozy for family and friends to gather.

BATHROOM REDESIGN

The homeowners’ existing primary bath layout worked well for their needs, yet they wanted cosmetic updates that kept the shower intact. Existing floor and wall tile remained but was pared with a new color system that included Blue Gaspe by Benjamin Moore to add drama on the walls, doors, and trim.

Bathroom design update_Chapel Hill

The tall vanity tower overpowered the space and was more storage than needed. It was removed and a dramatic accent wall was created featuring a texture-heavy wallpaper. By refinishing the cabinetry, replacing the countertops with quartzite, and updating the light fixtures and mirrors, this once basic bathroom was elevated into a fun more personal space.

POWDER ROOM DESIGN UPDATES

The powder bathroom was granted new life by replacing builder-grade colors and fixtures. Once again, cabinetry remained but was refinished, and the granite top was replaced with beautiful quartzite. A new mirror, light, and color-drenched wallpaper define a space that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
